Promoting Health

We all know it: Better diet, exercise, stress reduction, and smoking cessation can reduce the incidence of diabetes, heart disease, and other chronic illnesses. But while these health problems consume 85 percent of all health care resources, only 5 percent of the $1.4 trillion spent annually on health care in the United States goes to preventive care.

Group Health is changing that equation. We think preventive care is one of the nation's greatest untapped solutions, offering the opportunity to improve the health of millions while saving billions. Our coverage of regular screenings helps us catch health problems early, when they're easiest and most cost-effective to treat. We promote wellness by sponsoring physical activities such as bicycling events, ranging from fun rides for the entire family to competitive races and distance events, including the Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic (STP). We also sponsor programs promoting wholesome diets, stress reduction, and other healthy habits for families.

In 2006, we introduced the Health Profile, our online tool that allows members to fill out a questionnaire and receive a customized report detailing their health risks. We are one of the first health care providers in the country to link such reports to a patient's electronic medical record. This enables us to reach out to members who receive care at Group Health facilities when we determine we can make a difference in their health. Members having trouble managing their chronic conditions are contacted by their primary care team. Members who want help in areas such as diet, exercise, stress management, or smoking cessation are contacted by health coaches, another feature introduced in 2006.

Also in 2006, we concluded a yearlong trial demonstrating the effectiveness and popularity of group visits and moved to expand the program. Group visits give members with similar health issues extra time with their doctor beyond regular one-to-one appointments. In these 90-minute visits, our doctors share in-depth information with plenty of time for members' questions.

Finally, our members and purchasers benefit from research conducted by the Group Health Center for Health Studies. From the most effective vaccine protocols to the most accurate mammograms, from the benefits of regular exercise to the importance of treating depression, the Center is continually discovering new and innovative ways for us to promote better health. The public benefits, too, because we readily share what we learn with others in the health care community.

In 2006, we became one of the first health care systems to link personal health profiles directly to electronic medical records. The result: Our members are more engaged, doctors know more about their patients, and we are more proactive in helping them live healthier lives.
