Through Sun, Lightning, and Hail, 2009 Group Health STP a Blazing Success
For the seventh year, Group Health was the title sponsor of the Northwest's most popular cycling event, the Seattle-to-Portland Bicycle Classic or "STP." The 30th annual event took place July 11 and 12 amid blazing sun and pouring rain.
Approximately 10,000 riders from 46 states and 7 countries began their journey from Seattle's University District. Riders finished in either one day or two at Holladay Park in northeast Portland. Five rest stop stations along the route were staffed with Group Health volunteers who provided first aid and encouragement.
As sponsor, Group Health was represented by 71 Group Health recreational riders (members and staff) and 21 medical riders. Forty-two first-aid volunteers and 15 finish-line volunteers rounded out the team that helped make the event a success.
