A MESSAGE FROM CEO SCOTT ARMSTRONG

New Member Says: "I Didn't Know What I Was Missing"

Scott Armstrong, president and CEO, Group Health CooperativeI recently received a "birthday letter" from my physician's office — the annual letter that most patients at Group Health medical centers are sent as a reminder about recommended medical care. My letter told me that it's time to have my cholesterol levels checked and that I'm overdue for a tetanus shot. Also, since I just turned 50, I'm due for my first colonoscopy.

I admit I'm not thrilled about having a colonoscopy. But I'm impressed that my doctor is looking out for my good health. While many doctors focus on just treating symptoms, Group Health clinicians make preventive care a priority. And if they catch a problem, like high cholesterol, they're our proactive partners in managing the condition. I find that reassuring.

A business owner I talked to recently switched his entire company over to one of our newer health plans that offer greater choice. He decided to switch because Group Health had a good price. But he and his employees were happy to discover that they could keep their own non-Group Health doctors, and that they could access our incredibly useful Web site and all of the other services you'll find listed in the Group Health Member Services Resource Guide.

All doctors caring for Group Health patients — whether or not they practice at Group Health-operated facilities — benefit from what we've learned, as an organization that provides both care and coverage. They have access to the ongoing health research we conduct and our clinical guidelines, which detail proven approaches to treating specific conditions. They receive our recommended preventive care guidelines. And some are learning to use a few of the information technology innovations that have earned Group Health international recognition.

All of these elements help create a distinctly better approach to care. We hope you agree with the assessment of one of the business owner's employees: "Group Health is great. I didn't know what I was missing."
