Reflections on Giving: Mary Matsuda Gruenewald, Nurse and Donor

Mary Matsuda Gruenewald

As a longtime nurse, Mary Matsuda Gruenewald felt privileged to be part of Group Health. Even after her retirement, Mary stayed involved with the organization as an active volunteer and donor to the Group Health Foundation. A nurse manager and innovative leader, Mary knew the urgent need to provide financial assistance to nursing professionals who are interested in expanding their supervisory and management skills. And she recognized she could help develop and support a program that would make a difference in the nursing profession.

Her idea became a reality with the establishment of the Mary Matsuda Gruenewald Endowed Fund for Nurse Managers.

It goes without saying that Mary is a strong believer in philanthropy. She understands that with donor support critical resources will continue to be available — when and where they are needed most. That's why she also chose to make a planned gift and become a member of the Foundation's Legacy Society. Through bequests, life insurance policies, annuities, and other vehicles, Legacy Society donors support Group Health patients. The Group Health Foundation holds Legacy Society members to the highest honor, as their commitments truly further Group Health's mission to deliver the highest quality health care.
