Group Health Sponsors 'Wheel' Health

May 28, 2010

Group Health sponsors cycling events and programs to raise public awareness about the health benefits of an active lifestyle. A focus on cycling is a natural part of our long-standing commitment to the health and well-being of the community.

Group Health has been the title sponsor for the Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic (STP) for six years. This the largest cycling ride in the Northwest.

Group Health also sponsors Team Group Health, a competitive women's cycling team. With about 80 members, Team Group Health is one of the largest all-women's competitive cycling teams in the region.

You don't have to compete or ride long distances to get the benefits. Cycling or other moderate physical activity can reduce your risk of acquiring type 2 diabetes and colon cancer. Cycling also can reduce stress, and help lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

Coming Events

On June 10, Group Health joins the Cascade Bicycle Club as sponsor of Flying Wheels, a non-competitive bicycle tour of East King County. Riders can choose from a family-friendly rolling ride up to a 100-mile hilly challenge, with 45- and 75-mile loops in between. The event wraps up with a festival at the finish line.

The biggest bicycling event of the season is the 2010 Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic (STP), on July 17-18. Last year's ride drew almost 10,000 riders; about half were participating in their first Group Health STP.
