Cancer Treatment and Care at Group Health Medical Centers

Despite incredible advances in early detection and effective treatment, most people are understandably frightened upon receiving a diagnosis of cancer.

At Group Health, our cancer specialists (in medical circles, they are called oncologists and hematologists) combine the latest medical knowledge and technology with compassion and support to provide outstanding care for our patients.

Our patients benefit by having most of the services they need provided by one system of care. Our teams of oncologists, surgeons, and oncology nurses are supported by behavioral health specialists, home health nurses, physical therapists, a medical genetics department, and even pharmacists and social workers specially devoted to cancer patients.

Our diagnosis and treatment expertise includes the latest in imaging, radiation, chemotherapy, medications, and surgery. When appropriate, we refer our patients for highly specialized care at the leading regional and national cancer centers, including the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle.

'What unites us is compassion'
Dr. Eric Chen, chief of Group Health Oncology and Hematology

Group Health physicians stress shared decision-making with their patients and don't have a financial interest in the selection of one procedure over another.

"We're all committed to helping patients sift through their options to make the decisions that are right for them.

As many as 20 Group Health staff members may assist a single cancer patient, ranging from surgeons and oncology pharmacists to social workers and mental health experts. What unites this diverse group is compassion."

— Dr. Eric Chen, Oncology/Hematology service line chief
