Self-Referral to Group Health Specialists

As a Group Health member, you can consult with most Group Health specialists at Group Health medical centers without a referral from your personal physician. (This is called "self-referral.") Consultations with contracted non-Group Health specialists require a referral from your personal physician.

  • Women may self-refer to obstetricians and gynecologists, advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs), certified nurse-midwives, and physician assistants.
  • Spokane-area members may self-refer for hematology, oncology, and physical therapy at Spokane-area medical centers.
  • Alliant health plan members may select a personal physician from Group Health, The Everett Clinic, or Virginia Mason Medical Center. If you select your personal physician from Group Health or The Everett Clinic, you will need a referral for specialty care at Virginia Mason.

Self-Referral Specialists

You may self-refer for the following specialties. For detailed information about what your health plan allows, see your coverage agreement or contact Customer Service.

* Medicare patients must be referred for this service.
