Becky GlazeI have been a Group Health member for almost 12 years, 10 of those years as an employee. When I left Group Health, the first question I asked when offered a new job was "Do you have Group Health coverage?" After being told yes, I took the job.

Group Health has seen me through two open heart surgeries, injuries, and other ailments over the past 12 years, but my latest experience is the one I'd like to relate.

On a recent vacation, I went to Colorado with my family to spend a week "having fun." The fourth day of my having fun included a horseback ride. All the horses were rather feisty, but my 7-year-old niece wanted to ride a horse, so off we went!

About halfway through the ride, I fell sideways off my horse. I had the wind really knocked out of me, but had to remount the horse to ride 30 minutes back to the ranch. My family then drove me to the closest ER, which was two hours away.

At the ER, the staff asked questions about my health history. Because of my heart surgeries and other conditions, I take 17 different pills a day. Since I was so shaken by the fall, I couldn't remember them all. My partner asked if there was a nearby computer she could use to access my medical records on the ghc.org Web site. I provided my log-in information and my partner was back in five minutes with the list of my medications and my chronic conditions list.

I was able to tell the nurse which drugs I was taking, how I was taking them, how my chronic conditions were being treated, as well as my drug allergies. The nurse and all the staff I dealt with during my visit were very impressed that I was able to access this information via the Internet. They even offered me a job to train their patients to be more effective in their own care!

I love Group Health and especially the convenience of ghc.org. This time, the Group Health Web site gave me valuable information that I was able to share with a small hospital in Gunnison, Colo.

Thank you, Group Health, for having such a useful tool that assists me in managing my own care. Oh, and by the way, I'm not ever going to ride a horse again!
