Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be able to donate to the Group Health Foundation after the acquisition by Kaiser Permanente?
Absolutely. Group Health Foundation will continue with its mission and programs that are focused on immunizations and clinical innovations. The Group Health Foundation will become an independent, wholly-owned subsidiary of the Group Health Community Foundation after Group Health Cooperative is acquired by Kaiser Permanente. Our programs will continue to be community funded and we do not anticipate that Group Health Community Foundation will fund Group Health Foundation programs.
Since GHCF will have such significant assets, why would I contribute to the Foundation after the acquisition?
The Group Health Foundation will remain a separate organization even though it will join the Group Health Community Foundation. For decades, the Group Health Foundation has been supported by the community to ensure children and families have access to quality care, especially immunizations. The work of Group Health Foundation has contributed to thousands of patients getting better care though innovation funded from your dollars.
If you care about immunizations or clinical innovations, your support will be essential to keep these programs running. We do not expect that Group Health Community Foundation funds will be used to directly support these programs.
Finally, if you are funding Hospice Care, Cancer Care, CORE, or any other of the outstanding programs at Group Health Cooperative, you will have to donate to Group Health Foundation for those programs to continue to receive funding. Again, we do not expect that Group Health Community Foundation will be directly funding programs at Kaiser Permanente-Washington unless Kaiser goes through an extensive, open-to-all grant-seeking process.
Will the Group Health Foundation continue their efforts in childhood immunization and innovation?
Yes. The Group Health Foundation is dedicated to preventing diseases by continuing to make certain all children and families have access to immunizations. Every year children die from preventable diseases. Many of these diseases have a safe, reliable vaccine. However, one in three children in Washington state don't have their recommended vaccinations to stay healthy. Your donations help us make the problem more visible in the community and address it by providing fact-based information to parents and providers, making sure that every child has proper access to immunizations.
As patients, we aren't satisfied unless our health care is both of the highest quality and affordable. Your sustained financial commitment allows us to expand upon our decade of experience in improving the practice of health care, extending our work with Group Health Cooperative into the larger community. We will fund clinicians, practices, or hospitals across the state that have innovative and promising ideas for better serving their patients.
These are community- funded programs and will not receive funding from Group Health Community Foundation. If you believe these programs are essential to your life and work, it is vital that you continue to support them through the Group Health Foundation.
What will be the relationship between Group Health Foundation and Kaiser Permanente-Washington?
Following the acquisition, the Group Health Foundation will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Group Health Community Foundation, which was created from the proceeds of the acquisition. Group Health Foundation will not have any operational direction from Kaiser Permanente but the Foundation can support programs and facilities of Kaiser Permanente as it would any other potential grantee.
What if I have left a gift for the Group Health Foundation in my will?
Thank you for remembering us. If you have made a planned gift to the Group Health Foundation, you should not need to make any change to your will. If I have directed my gift to a specific program, will I still be able to fund that program?
Most likely. We are working with Kaiser Permanente to ensure programs and facilities that donors are supporting currently can continue to receive their donations. We are closing a few select donor-designated funds that have very few donors or a small balance of funds to be spent.
Will Kaiser Permanente-Washington be able to apply for grants?
Yes, if the acquisition transaction is approved, Kaiser Permanente-Washington will be able to apply for all grants just as any other organization that is looking for funds.
Will I be able to make contributions to the Group Health Community Foundation?
Group Health Community Foundation will not be taking contributions from individuals. If you want to see Group Health Foundation programs continue, you must give to Group Health Foundation directly.
How much of my gift will go directly to programs versus administrative costs?
Based on our 2013 IRS 990 filing , we spent 91 percent on charitable programs and nine percent on fundraising and management. We anticipate this ratio will remain the consistent over the next several years.
Is my gift to the Group Health Foundation tax deductible?
